"Every panel, every curve, structure, colour and surface processing were carefully considered, examined, modified and then built", this is how David Barker, artist and chronicler, describes the build of 38m Hetairos, the largest - and most probably last - mahogany yacht in the world. In 1991, no other yard except A&R was able to offer the experience in craftsmanship, the abilities and tools needed to build a wooden yacht of this kind. And still, the build was a unique challenge. The hull alone, 70mm of mahogany glued layer upon layer, placed great demands. But despite of this and many other hurdles concerning craftsmanship and technique: when Hetairos was completed within the agreed 662 days, everyone involved didn't just see a sailing boat in front of them but much more: a synthesis of arts.
